Creating Materials in Sync with the Brain

Transferring knowledge is a core skill in talent development. Most facilitators and instructional designers focus on what information to cover without regard for how the brain processes that information.

This session will introduce participants to the field of Cognitive-based Information Design (CID). CID (pronounced “sid”) puts the research on human perception and cognition into action by providing a systematic way to improve visual communication, print materials, and electronic resources.

Learning CID principles is a great way to strengthen your communication skills. Whether you are a manager making slide decks for meetings, an instructional designer building e-learning courses, or a facilitator creating handouts, CID can help you engage your audience, focus their attention, and retain what they've learned.

This event supports several elements in the ATD Competency Model, including
Instructional Design, Training Delivery, and Knowledge Management.

About the presenter, Phil Ransom

Phil Ransom helps executives design & deliver their written and spoken messages with vision, purpose, & clarity, in their voice, so they and their companies thrive.

Cognitive-based Information Design enables Phil to design messages consistent with how the brain processes information, and Phil is CID certified as both professional writer and presenter.

Using CID, he helped a Milwaukee CEO prepare talks delivered in 2017 in Monterrey, Mexico, Beijing, Shang Hai, New Delhi, and several US Cities.

He’s repurposed annual reports as collateral pieces for donor and volunteer recruitment. He’s designed capital campaign materials and an array of fund-raising documents for his non-profit clients.

A Wausau attorney client released her first book in late 2019 -Phil was her editor- and he’s now collaboratively developing mastermind group materials and social media presence.

Phil learned early-on that well-told stories are often the best way to make a point. His aim is always that listeners hear, understand, and then DO! Soft-spoken, light-hearted, yet compelling, he simplifies the complicated and presses courage into the faint-hearted.  He’s secretly hoping these CID insights benefit you for years to come.
